Fortified Wines
Fortified wine is made by adding distilled spirits to wine, increasing its alcohol content and enhancing its flavour and longevity. Port is a common style, known for its rich, sweet flavours and notes of dark fruit and chocolate. Dessert wine is naturally sweet and often enjoyed with desserts. Styles include Tokaji, a Hungarian wine made from grapes affected by noble rot, offering honeyed and apricot flavours, and Icewine, made from grapes frozen on the vine, resulting in intense sweetness and purity of fruit. Both fortified and dessert wines offer unique characteristics and complex flavours.
