Description
The 2022 Figgie Daniel is an energetic wine with a lively spritz, featuring green apple, lemon rind, elderflower, and yeasty characters. Unfiltered and unfined, it contains lees sediment in the bottle, following the traditional Col Fondo method. We recommend a gentle shake before serving to distribute the sediment, enhancing its cloudy, tangy, and nutty fizz.
History and Winemaking
The 2022 Figgie Daniel is part of the “Don’t Feed The Ponies” range, inspired by Dartmoor National Park’s campaign to preserve its wild horses’ natural habitat. For every bottle purchased, 25p is donated to the Dartmoor Preservation Association. This wine is made by Sandridge Barton winery, located on the Sharpham Estate along the banks of the River Dart in Devon. The winery, with over 40 years of winemaking history, harvests up to 60 tonnes of grapes annually. The grapes for Figgie Daniel come from a vineyard planted in 2008, now with 24 acres under vine, including varietals like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Madeline Angevine, and Bacchus.
The traditional Col Fondo style, akin to Pet-Nat, involves fermenting the wine in the bottle with the lees sediment, creating a natural, ancestral-method fizz. All winemaking processes, including bottling, occur on-site, with maturation in various vessels, including oak barrels and stainless steel tanks.
Tasting Notes
Figgie Daniel offers a light and spritzy profile, with refreshing green apple, lemon rind, elderflower, and subtle yeasty notes. The presence of lees sediment adds complexity and a unique texture to the wine, resulting in a tangy, nutty finish. Its lively spritz makes it a perfect choice for summer enjoyment.
Food Pairings
Pair Figgie Daniel with kimchi or the fish sauce in Thai styles of food or robust cheeses that can stand up to the tangy flavours like blue cheeses or aged cows milk cheeses.
