History and Winemaking

Achaval Ferrer was founded in 1995 by Santiago Achaval and a group of Italian friends, including Manuel Ferrer, Tiziano Siviero, and famed oenologist Roberto Cipresso. Santiago, inspired by the quality of Californian wines, believed that Argentina could produce wines of similar excellence. They focused on terroir, specializing in vineyards with ancient, ungrafted vines, up to a century old. These low-yielding vines produce exceptional complexity and concentration in their wines.

Winemaker Gustavo Rearte has been at the helm since 2013, continuing the founders’ philosophy while evolving and improving the wines with each vintage. The 2021 Malbec benefits from this meticulous approach, showcasing the best of what the vineyards have to offer.

Achaval Ferrer’s debut wine, the 1999 Finca Altamira, marked a significant achievement by becoming the first Argentinian wine to earn five stars from Decanter magazine. In 2011, Tenute del Mondo purchased Achaval Ferrer, maintaining the commitment to quality and terroir. They continue to seek out low-yielding old vine sites, such as Nazarenas, purchased in 2019.
