Description

A bold and distinctive natural, low-intervention orange wine, Little Bee 2023 is made entirely from skin-contact Pinot Gris grown in the lush South Devon countryside. Vibrant and textured, it bursts with aromas of ruby grapefruit, white strawberry, and orange peel, leading into a complex palate of raspberry, tangy stone fruits, and a touch of salinity. Soft tannins provide gentle grip, while bright acidity brings freshness, making this an expressive and intriguing wine for those who love adventurous, skin-contact styles.

History and Winemaking

Produced by Sandridge Barton Wines, formerly Sharpham Estate, this wine is crafted on the picturesque banks of the River Dart in Devon, where English winemaking has thrived for over 40 years. Benefiting from a relatively warm microclimate, the Pinot Gris grapes are left on their skins for three weeks before undergoing wild fermentation, giving the wine its unique colour, texture, and complexity. Part of the “Don’t Feed The Ponies” range, named after Dartmoor National Park’s conservation campaign, Little Bee highlights the growing potential for natural and skin-contact wines in England.

Tasting Notes

A deep amber-orange hue introduces a nose filled with citrus zest, white strawberry, and floral undertones, with hints of ruby grapefruit and orange peel. The palate is layered and textured, featuring bright notes of raspberry, sour stone fruits, and a touch of spice, supported by soft tannins and a vibrant, taut acidity. The finish is long and structured, leaving a lingering impression of minerality and gentle grip.

Pairings

This expressive and food-friendly orange wine pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, and rich seafood dishes like butter-poached lobster or grilled mackerel. The wine’s acidity and tannic structure also make it a perfect match for hearty grain salads, spiced Middle Eastern dishes, or aged cheeses. Try it with Keen’s Extra Mature Cheddar for a truly sensational pairing experience.
